  • The iPod Touch (also known as the iTouch) is essentially a stripped down version of the Apple iPhone, it runs on iOS and has access to the App store, however it is not capable of making phone calls. For those who don’t know, Apple held their keynote releasing info on the new iPods today… talk about ho-hum!

We’ve lost the classic Apple white on all the models (although previous gen, only the Video had white available still since the Shuffle/Nano had gone to aluminum cases). Although I was a fan of the previous generation Nano’s aluminum, I’m not sure if I’m really into the ‘fat’ nano or aluminum video.. they look like funny seashells to me (??).

I was hoping for the iPod video everyone was expecting last gen– essentially the same backend hardware (30/60gb variants) but with a touchscreen spanning the entire device’s face. Instead we get the iPod Touch… a bastard child between an iPhone (which Apple has already attempted to cripple) and an iPod– gaining neither of their strengths and settling down in a grey zone of mediocrity with a mere 8 or 16gb. A device the size of a PDA and only using flash memory? There’s no way one of the drives from a 30GB or the drive collection of the 60/80gb would not fit within one.

If the touch maintained it’s status quo as the ‘top’ iPod, there’d be a definite trumping model, however at this point it’s nothing more than a crappy iPhone PDA (which boasts even less memory than the Touch).

I was really hoping to upgrade this gen, since I skipped the 5.5 gen (since most of the updates seemed to be via firmware), but now my only real option to store my 25GB music library is … the classic iPod video? The same hardware I have now, but with an aluminum case? No thanks… I guess my 2 year old 30GB video will have to do until the next generation Zune comes out (which, I believe, has exceeded it’s expectations and has inheritantly passed the current generation iPod in terms of both designed functionality and usefulness)

The Rules of iPod Engagement:

1. The top model MUST exceed the capabilities of ALL other product lines. iPod Touch 8/16gb? That’s a no-no. Imagine if the iPod Video had less storage than the iPod Photo?

2. The elite models should set the standard, not follow the trend. What’s with the shuffle/nanos getting design updates before the Video? That’s like taking what you’ve learned about aerodynamics on a Honda Civic and putting it onto the BAR Honda F1 car. That’s ass backwards, son. If I’m putting down half a grand for a little music machine, I want it to bleed of technology and innovation. Not to be the older-fatter-higher-maintenance sister of the $150 model.

3. The iPod is no longer alone. The Zune is a solid piece of machinery, and those of us who’re looking for a solid product, not a name with white headphones, are willing to jump ship… Creative has some OK ones too. But they don’t look so cool.

Anyway, since I figure I’ll be with my 30GB Video for a while longer now, I cleaned the face under my hella expensive (but amazing) Moshi cover and polished the back plate (which was previously ‘brushed metal’ and is now ‘polished kinda brushed metal’).

My iPod is a black version w/ Moshi front cover. It is not a U2 version.

The photo looks weird, like it’s tonal mapped.. but it isn’t.

Closing comment: I can’t wait until Rockbox support is better for the 5G Video!

UPDATE: Hmm, finally saw some RL photos of the classic on engadget. The aluminum makes me feel weird. It seems practical, but something about the glorious shiny (and oh so smudgable) ‘normal’ iPod has been lost… no white.. no shiny.. is this the new Apple? Even the computers seem to be following suit (focus: iMac). Perhaps I’m still living in the past with my shiny iPod, bulky Apple Keyboard and PowerPC Mac Mini.
